I arrived at Hanna around April 88 and was lucky to Graduate the program in June 89. It would be the last time I would graduate from anything. I grew up in Alameda CA. I could care less about school. I would not even try and get good grades or finish work. I did not care to finish high school or make a serious attempt at college. Some how though I found a way to succeed and over come myself as my biggest obstacle. I never took anything in life serious as a kid and had no idea what I wanted to do. I had dreams of becoming a Naval Aviator, but Without graduating school though they would never take me. I volunteered for my hometown Fire Department and thought about becoming a Fire Fighter after I helped fight the Oakland/Berkeley hills fire, but I could not focus long enough to finish one college class. I worked at Oakland Airport starting on my birthday my senior year and never went back to school. I worked for a few cargo companies with my longest stint at UPS. I started cooking at age 21 for a well known catering company in Sonoma called Elaine Bell Catering. I was the grill cook and helped prepare other dishes in the main course as well. I cooked at the Culinary Institute for private parties a few times as well as many of the wineries in Napa and Sonoma. I went on to operate heavy equipment and construction until I landed on a ranch in San Ramon and started working as a cowboy and a horseman. I would get my first Camera job from all of my hard work and dedication on the ranch. It would also be a huge step in my growing up in life with the guidance of the man I named my son after, Edward Freitas. After installing a mile of barbed wire fence on a housing project in the 100 degree heat of San Ramon, his wife asked me what I was going to be in life? I was baffled and could not come up with an answer. She said have you ever shot a camera. I could remember shooting my Uncles video camera to family gatherings and I said sure what do you have for me. I was shooting the starting gate at Golden Gate Fields the next season. 3 years later and many dues payed and I mean many. I booked my first Network Television job in 1999 at the Inaugural Silicon Valley Bowl which is no longer played, in San Jose. I am now a Freelancer. I service all of the television stations in the world who televise sports and or Entertainment. I owe a ton of Gratitude to Hanna Boys Center for helping me see in myself what I was unable to see. I feel like Hanna Boys Center was the best thing to happen to me. I find myself repeating behavior learned at Hanna in my daily life, like hospital corners on my sheets as I make my bed every morning. Thank you Hanna Boys Center for teaching me valuable lessons for life. I am very thankful that Hanna gave me a foundation in which I was able to build from once I had realized how valuable the time I spent there really was. The people of Hanna Boys Center are very special to me and my growth in life.

Hello, I was a student at Hanna 63-64. and I had Mr. K. Krumdick as my counselor.Monsignor O'Conner was the with Fr. O'Hara.I think 64 was the first year that Fr.Pulskamp was there. I worked on the ranch, and did the garbage truck. I am now retired from Law Enforcement, and live in Lake Havasu AZ. it brings a flood of memories that are all good, when i read this. Thank you Hanna Center Jim Connolly

I was at Hanna Boy's Center from about 1966 to 1968, I was about 14 when I first arrived. I recognize some of the names I saw in reading the posts, such as Bruce Santucci, Vince Hanna, Paul Davis, John Brown, Fr O'Hara, Mr. Ferraro, Mr. Nichols and others. I believe I lived in the Rosary Hill Cottage. During my sophmore year at Hanna myself and several other boy's started driving to Napa with a couple of Hanna contractors to remodel an old home on First Steet in Napa - upon completion this became the first group home sponsered by Hanna Boy's Center - there were I believe six boys living there, myself, John Brown, Tom Chin and others I do not remember the names of. This home was eventually sold and turned into a Bed and Breakfast. I went inside the B&B some years ago and it was strange to be standing in my old bedroom. I attended Justin High School in Napa(my Junior year)and eventually returned to my home in Alameda, Calif where I finished my senior year of high school.
Hanna gave me much needed guidance and support in the time I was there - at Justin High School I developed an interest in accounting and eventually went on to a Bachelor of Accounting degree from New Mexico State University and a career as a CPA for the last 31 years.
From pictures on the website it appears Hanna has changed with the times and kept pace with the needs of young kids - I look forward to visiting the next time I am in California(living in Oregon), I have wondered over the years what has become of the people I knew while at the center and the group home.
Thanks
Jack Money

I'm a Hanna graduate, and was there from 1987 to 1990 - I arrived two months before my 11th birthday! My fondest memory of HBC will always be Bill Shaw, who to this day I'll remember as a father I never had, and of Lorraine Hines, who was my surrogate mother during my first year. I'm a free man today because of Hanna Boys Center, and I'm proud of my time there.
Love,

To: Bruce Santucci. Remember me? We were on the 1967 basketball team together with Paul Davis, Vince Hanna and Mike Marth to name a few. I mailed the center a few years ago and found that I was the 1,100 kid to pass through - 10 Jan 1967 to 16 June 1968. You have an interesting read of life - seems you ended up in a good place (now is the best time to be there anyway). I still have a picture of that basketball team which I'd be happy to share with you if you want. Frank

I lived at Hanna Boys'Center from 1964 to 1968. I have great memories there. Cigar-smoking Fr. O'Hara was the administrator there at the time. Lou Ferraro was the athletic director and Hal Nichols assistant. They were great. I loved gym nights and the games and activities that were organized for us. I loved all the sports there - Basketball, Baseball, Swimming, Intramural Contests between cottages, and even PE class. The workshop classes: Carpentry and Plastics were in retrospect, excellent. Most of the teachers were nuns from the Dominican Order with a few lay teachers to cover the gaps. Fr. Pulskamp arrived during my last year there. The structured living and study environment at Hanna helped me gain confidence in myself and helped me understand others on a deeper level. After graduating from 10th grade, I was sent to the SF Boys' Home on Steiner and Fulton. I graduated from St Ignatius College Prep in 1970, then went on to play basketball and graduate from Seattle University in 1975 with a BA in Education and my Teaching Credentials in Language Arts. I went on to work with the US Peace Corps as a Volunteer in Kabul, Afghanistan from 1976-78 where I taught High School English and Coached the National Basketball Team. After, I worked in Japan as an English Teacher for 4 years at the Tokyo Foreign Language College and married a Japanese girl. Returned to Seattle with one child and wife and then left the USA again to begin working in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia with the Institute of Public Administration. Worked there for 6 years, and then returned to California and bought and ran two Sylvan Learning Center franchises - one in Walnut Creek, the other in Danville. Sold the franchises two years later and began work at the Science Supply Company in Richmond, Canada selling wholesale chemicals,
equipment, glassware, and learning materials to UCB in Vancouver. Trouble was though, a year later, I was indicted in the US for being a minor co-conspirator of a meth-ring. I spent 17 months in Florence, CO in a Federal Prison Camp for selling precursor chemicals and lab equipment to my co-conspirators in the USA. And that's all I have to say about that but to top off the experience, my Japanese wife divorced me. Can't say I'm proud of any of that but perhaps I deserved it. Got out, and returned to my last employer in Saudi Arabia and worked in Khobar for 7 years. During that time, I re-married and converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. We returned to the USA in 2002 and today live in Palm Bay, Florida and take care of our two children 9 yrs and 13 yrs while I operate a small online business from home and write articles for website owners and syndicates and my wife works as an RN. My eldest son, Jason, is grown and lives in Redwood City. We are getting ready to move to Tyler, Texas in June, 2010 where my wife is starting work as an RN and I will continue writing articles and doing Internet SEO work with online businesses. My life has been interesting so far. I've learned a lot of valuable lessons. Hanna Boys' Center was the source of many of them. I wonder sometimes about what happened to old friends like Paul Davis, Ed Dolores, Mike Benedict, Darryl Sullivan, and everyone else living at Hanna while I was there? It's good to see how Hanna is continuing to grow and change and I wish all the boys there the best that life can bring them. Remember, life can sometimes be hard to bear but it surely is worth living it to the fullest. Dream big, set your goals, and keep everything you do aimed at the little goals you need to reach in order to live your dreams and most importantly, have fun and smile while you're doing it.

I was in Hanna Center from 1961-64. Started in Mt. Carmel and ending in Rosary Hill. One of the highlights of my stay was the year ('62 or '63) the 5th, 6th, and 7th grade basketball teams all made the Northern California CYO Championship Playoffs, held in Fortuna, CA. We returned home with three 1st Place trophies. I played center for the 7th Grade Team, along with my good friends, Johnny Tacosa and 'Pancho' Villa. Our coach was Lou Ferrario.
I was also a member of the Boy's Choir, directed by Sister Yvonne Therese. We were honored to have been invited to appear on San Francisco's Channel 5 television station, in 1963, for a memorial program to honor John F. Kennedy as the Country mourned his assassination.
It was the excellent education that I received at Hanna Center that enabled me to graduate from San Francisco State University, with a Degree in Computer Science. Today, I am a long-haul truck driver (go figure). I have fond memories of Monsignor O'Connor, Mr. Healey, Mr. Mesaris, of whom I never tired, and pestered constantly, to hear of his exploits from a 20-year career in the Navy. Nor would I care to forget Mr. Giudice, our Gym Coach, or Mr. Woody, Rosary Hill Counselor for many, many years and the school bus driver.
In closing, I must say that while not all my memories of Hanna Center are happy ones; it's those that were, I carry with me today and recall with fondness. Thank you.

I attended Hanna from 79 thru 82 and have nothing but very fond memories of those two and a half years even though I recall spending the majority of that time doing Hours, Work Projects, and lines, and believe me I earned every bit of it. I was very happy to see people on the bulletin board that were at Hanna with me. Paul Massell, Martin Pueblo, John Martin, and Nic Nicholson. I'm very happy to hear that things are going well for all of you. Nic, I have your email address and will make sure that Danny gets it..I know that he would love to get in touch with you. My name is Gregory Downey...
I was at Hanna from for the years of 1986 and 1987.
Junior High basically.
I finished highschool in 1990.
I joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormon) in 1992.
Just over a year later I served a 2 year mission for the LDS Church in Washington DC, Baltimore Maryland, Jersey City NJ, and Newark New Jersey.
I married my wife Hillary in 1996.
We lived in Stockton California shortly then moved to Idaho (where she is from).
I attended Idaho State University and received a degree in communication.
I went on to complete some additional course work in interpersonal communicagtion, mediation, and conflict resolution at Boise state University.
I currently work in the personal development coaching industry and have been involved in projects with such individuals as Jack Canfield (Co-Author of the Chicken Soup For The Soul series), Mark Victor Hansen (Co-Author of the Chicken Soup For The Soul series), Dr. Steven R. Covey (Author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People), Robert G. Allen (Author of Enlightened Wealth), Robert Kiyosaki (Author of Rich Dad Poor Dad), Gary Ryan Blair "The Goals Guy" and many many others.
I am currently involved in a project with the makers of "PASS IT ON", a follow up video to "The Secret".... (www.passitontoday.com)
We have 4 children (Asher 8, Caleb 6, Lila 5, and Clarie 10 months) and currently reside in Saratoga Springs Utah.
I am currently working on a book project that addresses the cycles of generational mediocrity.
Hanna Boys Center represents a time in my life that afforded me the opportunity in many ways to get real with myself and to see life through a different lens. A lens that wasn't clouded by chaos and abuse.
For the first time in my life I was in a space that afforded me the opportunity to discover many things that I am still passionate about even today.
I owe a great amount of my success to Gerry Borchelt and Fr. Crews for believing in me at a time in my life when I didn't know how to believe in myself.
Gerry... You introduced me to a world of meaningful ideas.
I am better because of you and for that I will forever be grateful.

Congrats to (grandpa) Claude. Ken asked about Fr. Pulskamp. At the time of this writing Sept '06 he is the pastor at St. Eugene's cathedral in Santa Rosa. He is also now "Monsignor Pulskamp." He was the Director when I was there in the early 80's too. Monsignor O'Connor (R.I.P.)was still there as well but basically retired other than serving Mass. I remember very well, serving mass as an altar boy for both of them. Other than the gray hair Msgr. Pulskamp looks very much the same 25 years later.
After moving around the country the past 20 years I'm now back to living in Santa Rosa with my family. Wife and 8 kids.
