About Hanna

Hanna Boys Center is a private non-profit which provides a residential treatment center/ boarding school that helps under-resourced adolescent boys who come to us voluntarily. Each client has recognized his life needs help and has taken the initiative to change his course. Many are struggling at home, in their community and/or school. Hanna provides direct services through the residential program, accredited high school, and Clinical/Therapy department. Additionally, Hanna, through Hanna Institute, provides training and consultative services, around childhood trauma, to other youth serving organizations. We work collaboratively with these organizations to help them improve care and enhance program outcomes. Hanna transforms the lives of youth, families and communities impacted by trauma and adversity through resilience, connection, and spiritual wellness. 

As a leading provider of trauma-informed care training in Sonoma County and Northern California, Hanna Institute is dedicated to advancing nonviolent communication, social justice, and trauma recovery. We do this by bringing trauma-informed care to the people and places most impacted by trauma and violence. By raising public awareness, transforming agency practices and culture, and teaching strategies for self-care and recovery, we are helping transform our communities. 


The Director of Outcomes, Research and Program Evaluation is a critical leadership position within Hanna, responsible for driving the vision and development of our outcomes focus. Reporting to the Chief Clinical Officer, the Director of Research and Evaluation will work closely with Hanna Senior Leadership to define and contribute to Hanna’s strategic research and program evaluation work, with a particular focus on the impact and outcomes of Hanna’s programs and services. The Director will support the implementation and management of comprehensive evaluation processes that lead to informed decision-making and the delivery of high-quality direct service as well as training and consulting services. The Director of Research and Evaluation will serve as an organizational resource to support a culture of learning as we seek to test-measure-learn-iterate. In this role, the successful candidate leads, guides, and inspires interdisciplinary staff and leadership in evaluating initiatives and conducting applied research studies that address the clinical, service and organizations needs of the institution. She/He/They provides leadership that creates an environment that stimulates, initiates, and supports outcomes evaluation and applied research; facilitates and coordinates studies through the review process; engages staff in evaluation and outcomes research studies. 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Evaluation Design and Execution 

  • Works with Hanna Leadership to design research, measurement, quality improvement, and evaluation systems and processes across all departments and functions 
  • Manages implementation of evaluation processes through development of logic models, outcomes, measurement instruments, data gathering, and analysis. 
  • Provides guidance and expertise in developing and executing evaluation plans of existing programs, new services and emerging interventions developed by Hanna staff 
  • Promotes efforts to improve access to information and the ability of staff at all levels to use data to generate change and improvements. 
  • Works in partnership with community organizations and agencies to define measurable outcome indicators for community initiatives and collaborative grants spearheaded by Hanna. 
  • Articulates an understanding of service delivery, focusing on client outcomes through interdisciplinary collaboration. 
  • Participates in efforts to develop evidence based clinical, educational, consultant, and executive practice that can then be disseminated to other providers. 


  • Recommends and collaborates on clinical research projects that examine changes in practices that benefit outcomes and care. 
  • Supports staff to examine problems associated with caring for populations using evaluation and applied research studies. 
  • Promotes applied research activities that support Hanna’s mission and goals and objectives and is mindful of the culture and trauma histories of the populations served. 
  • Recommends and establishes priorities for appropriate and feasible evaluation and applied research studies that meet Hanna priorities. 
  • Develops study design, methodologies and protocols and directs ongoing applied research and evaluation studies based on priorities of Hanna and the state of trauma and resiliency knowledge. 
  • Guides the development of a research program, including exploring collaborations with universities, colleges, and other institutions or agencies. Serves as liaison with others interested in research. Supports educational affiliations for purposes of providing research experiences for students. 
  • Facilitates and encourages preparation of abstracts, paper/poster presentations and publication of research studies. 
  • Maintains evaluation and applied research competency by participation in continuing education, professional organizations, and other related activities. Fosters participation in research conferences, and other related conferences 
  • Serves as an expert and advocate for protection of human subjects, being especially mindful of the history of research with marginalized populations. 
  • Identifies potential funding sources for evaluation and applied research activities. 

Data collection and analysis

  • Collaborates with Quality, and IT to Maintain data systems and perform analysis using quantitative and qualitative data. 
  • Draft and implement data collection tools (i.e., validated measures, interview guides, surveys, evaluations) based on the organization’s needs., including to monitor processes and outcomes of practice and identify areas for improvement efforts. 
  • Identifies methods of data collection and directs development and maintenance of databases to provide statistical analysis and reports for leadership. 
  • Draft and present content on impact and evaluation for reports, presentations, or other materials that support the sharing of findings with internal and external audiences. 


  • Participates in designing meaningful data-driven reports for distribution to designated groups of staff, e.g., scorecards, dashboards, or other reporting mechanisms. 
  • In partnership with Hanna Development Department and the Grants and Programs Manager, contribute to Hanna grant reporting, ensuring that metrics are measured consistently and accurately 
  • Collaborate with Director of Public Relations and Development Department broadly to ensure that data is organized and presented in a format that helps external funders understand Hanna’s impact. 
  • Draft white papers on Hanna services, interventions and present at industry conferences. 
  • Prepare articles and presentations of relevant applied research. 
  • Special projects as required, may include collaborative assignments with other departments. 

Experience, Knowledge, and Skills:

  • Deep commitment to equity, social justice and improving individual and community health and well-being 
  • Enthusiasm and passion for Hanna’s mission and programs. 
  • Master’s degree or higher in discipline related to Behavioral Health Services Research (including clinical or community psychology, special education, sociology, economics, public health, or related field). Ph.D. preferred. 
  • Minimum of seven years of successful experience in research, evaluation, or program management roles (preferably in a nonprofit, human service or government organization providing mental and behavioral health or educational services). 
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct both process and outcomes-based evaluation and applied research studies, as well as appreciation of appropriate use of qualitative and quantitative methodologies and research designs. 
  • History of research publication and/or paper presentations. 
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, and procedures of research and program evaluation practices, including as they apply to marginalized communities 
  • Ability to use secondary databases in addition to primary data collection methods, sound statistical knowledge. 
  • Knowledge developmental trauma, childhood adversity, and trauma informed systems of care 
  • Understanding of rigorous evaluation methodology. 
  • Demonstrated proficiency in database management and reporting – significant experience with Salesforce a plus 
  • Advanced survey development experience 
  • Experience with building data visualizations 
  • Strong ability to prioritize workload, distill information, synthesize, and communicate effectively with others. 
  • Demonstrated ability to translate academic/theoretical knowledge into pragmatic approaches. 
  • Capacity to manage and organize confidential information. 
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and writing skills. 
  • Ability to work independently, creatively, and flexibly in a dynamic environment and manage multiple competing deadlines 
  • Organized and proactive with proven problem-solving skills and solutions-focused attitude 
  • Demonstrate willingness to continue to learn, grow and develop personally and professionally 
  • Valid CA state driver’s license 


  • Must clear background check for a Community Care Licensed facility, including physical, tb and drug test. 
  • Sit for extended periods of time and the ability to manage repetitive hand/wrist movements while using a computer keyboard and/or the phone. 
  • Bend, squat, stoop, and walk-up flight of stairs. 
  • Lift and/or carry up to 20 lbs., occasionally. Duties are primarily performed in an office environment at a desk or computer terminal.
