Hanna Students Take A Bite Of RealityMay 4, 2016
Bite of Reality is a two-and-a-half-hour, hands-on simulation that gives students a taste of real-world financial realities.
Every students is given a fictional occupation, salary, spouse and family, student loan debt, credit card debt and medical insurance payments. Students must then visit each table in Hanna’s gym, staffed by Hanna staff and faculty and “purchase” something from each from a pre-set list of options provided by Redwood Credit Union: housing, transportation, food, clothing, household necessities, day care, and other needs.
As they spend their earnings they have to check in at the Redwood Credit Union table and see if they are on track or if they have gone over budget. If they have gone over budget they will need to return to the table to make an alternate selection within their budget.
This interactive activity teaches teens how to make financial decisions and give them a better understanding of the challenges of living on a budget. Following is a list of the various tables:
Housing & Utilities
Groceries and Dining
Clothing & Personal Care
