Troubled Youth Schools

Individual and family counseling are an integral part of a boy’s experience at Hanna Boys Center.

Each boy is assigned a caseworker who is a licensed therapist or intern practicing under the supervision of a licensed practitioner. This one on one mental health care sets Hanna apart from many troubled youth schools. The caseworker works with the boy and his family to develop goals and an individual treatment plan.

Individual therapy focuses on the issues that are most important to the boy and often includes topics including; clinical assessment using industry standard measurement tools for trauma, anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation and substance use disorders. In addition skills taught include many types of affect regulation, overcoming learning disabilities and adjusting to life at Hanna while addressing historic and current issues with their families. Therapists address past traumas experienced and guide the boy through the counseling process using evidence based programs and practices including; Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Art Therapy, EMDR (to process past traumas), The Matrix Model (for Substance Use).

Treatment Plan Review (TPR) meetings are held throughout the year to update the plans and goals for each boy with progress reports sent to his family.

As a boy works to change his life while residing at Hanna, Therapists and Interns design individual and family counseling sessions to help these needed changes continue, with the goal of reintegrating back into his homelife.

Families are expected to be involved in the therapeutic process. Sessions are provided to help improve communication and overall family dynamics. These meetings help the family determine what they can do to improve the situation at home.

The Phoenix Program

Many of the boys coming to Hanna face substance abuse challenges, either directly or by someone within their immediate family. The Phoenix Program is specifically designed for these kids – those who have current or recent substance use and/or abuse histories requiring initial or continued interventions. Besides the therapeutic and spiritual components typical of many recovery programs, the Phoenix program includes an outdoor and wilderness education experience.

Depending on the severity of his issue, a boy is placed into the Phoenix Program in one of three ways:

  • Assessments by the admissions coordinator and substance abuse caseworker
  • By self-referral where a boy requests to be in the Phoenix Program
  • As a result of a positive drug test

Students in this program are divided into different phases and given the tools they need to recover and self-heal. It is a very difficult and challenging program and much support is needed. Students are introduced to the 12-step recovery model and encouraged to attend weekly on-campus meetings with either Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous.

Every week during the school year, these students must attend psycho-educational group meetings as well as individual counseling.

Dedicated caseworkers provide individual trauma-based counseling to help address and heal any past traumas, and work actively with any current maladaptive behaviors due to trauma for all students in the Phoenix program.
